Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn at Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. When she was a young girl, Roman's carnival-barker father died in a tragic way, which made her mother Mary Pauline (Gold) to work as an attendant or cleaner to help them be able to survive. Ruth attended school, and grew up poor in Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. But she only stayed in school for a couple of years, then leaving to pursue her acting profession. The path she chose did not come without challenges. While in New York, her first job involved posing stills in crime magazines. acting work she longed for was not available. Then, she worked as an hat-checker at the nightclub before calling her quits and relocating to Boston. As an usherette, she worked during the early morning hours and also performed at the New England Repertory Company by night, which was her first acting position that was permanent. She also studied drama and later graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
